Stretch Marks

Stretch marks occur when the skin is pulled by rapid growth or stretching. Although the skin is usually fairly elastic, the collagen and elastin in the lower layer of the skin, both of which give the skin its strength and elasticity, become thinner and break when it’s overstretched. At first, the marks look reddish-purple. This is because the stretched skin is more transparent and reveals the small blood vessels that lie deep in the skin. Later on as the blood vessels contract, the purplish color fades away into the white color of the underlying fat, which shows up in white/grey lines on the skin. This is normally referred to as stretch marks.

Who gets them?

For most men and women, stretch marks normally occur during puberty as they gain weight during phases of rapid growth. Pregnancy, obesity, and body building exercises can result in people getting stretch marks. Similarly, those using steroid-containing skin creams or taking oral corticosteroids for long periods of time can also experience stretch marks on their body.

Where do Stretch Marks usually occur?

  • During normal periods of growth (puberty), stretch marks can show up as horizontal lines on the back, bottoms and thighs of men and women.
  • During pregnancy, they show up on the breast and abdomen. Part of this is due to the hormonal changes a woman experiences during this period.
  • Bodybuilders and those on fast-track diets can get stretch marks on their upper arms, thighs and chest.
  • After a period of excessive weight loss

How do we treat?

Treatment of stretch marks can be achieved in different ways. All conditions and skin surfaces cannot be treated by one procedure. Each treatment regime is custom tailored for individual patients and depends upon their age, skin condition, hereditary, hormonal, as well as medical and environmental factors. Your dermatologist at Binsina Laser Clinic can advise you the best treatment or combination of treatments suited to your condition. Treatments are carefully selected from the following set of procedures after a thorough examination of the area to be treated.

How do these treatments work?

The eTwo Sublative procedure uses a combination of infrared light and bi-polar radio frequency to provide controlled deep dermal heating, which both stimulates new collagen and improves aged collagen to reduce deep wrinkles and tighten skin. During the procedure some patients feel a warm sensation while others can experience a slight pinching sensation.

The Portrait Plasma uses the plasma technology (plasma is the fourth state of matter) that works by delivering millisecond pulses of nitrogen plasma energy both on and below the surface of the skin to modify the skin’s architecture so that new collagen is generated leaving a healthy and even skin with an improved tone and texture.

How many treatments will I need?

Each treatment regimen is different and varies from case to case depending upon age, skin condition, hormonal imbalances, genetic disposition, medical, environmental and dietary factors. Most patients can expect between 5 to 6 treatments to see improvement. However, some may require more to achieve the desired results. A periodic top up treatment is recommended to continue to enjoy the youthfulness and freshness of your facial skin. It is advisable to treat the stretch marks while they are still red as it tends to reduce their intensity and speeds up the healing process.

When will I see the results?

Results depend upon the age and condition of the skin. Some patients start to see early results over a period of 4 – 6 weeks. Others may take longer to see improvements. Further improvements continue to be observed for several months after the treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Generally, there are minimum side effects such as slight redness or mild swelling in the treated area, which is generally temporary. In some cases they can last from one to two days. In others, they can last from five to seven days as tiny scabs form and eventually fall off leaving a pink and healthy skin. Patients are advised not to expose the treated area to direct sunlight, very hot water and abrasive cleansers for some time. Patients are strongly advised to follow post-care instructions provided by the Clinic to minimize risks and achieve the desired results.

What are the benefits of Non-Surgical treatment of Stretch Marks?

  • No cutting or puncturing of the skin
  • No surgery required
  • Minimal discomfort
  • Minimal risk of change in skin
  • May be used for all skin types
  • Minimal or no downtime

*Benefits and risks may vary from case to case basis and will depend on size and type of skin being treated, age, hereditary, medical, hormonal and life style factors.
