Acne Scarring

Acne Scarring

Acne affects the majority of the population during their teens and can continue into adulthood. If untreated properly and in a timely manner, it can spread and become inflammatory.

Post-inflammatory changes can damage the skin and cause lesions, some of which can become permanent scars. Inflamed pimples, nodules and cysts can cause considerable damage to the skin. In some cases, it can leave the skin discolored. The discoloration of skin in patches is called Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation, more (link to Hyperpigmentation page)

What are the most common types of Acne Scars?

The most common types of scars caused by inflammatory acne:
Ice Pick Scars – look like pits in the skin, normally caused by inflammatory acne, usually occur on the cheeks.
Boxcar Scars – round in shape, resemble chickenpox scars, caused by inflamed acne lesion, can occur anywhere on the skin.
Rolling Scars – look like small waves on the skin surface, occur when bands develop between the skin surface and the dermis, can appear on any part of the body where acne has developed.

Treatment of Acne Scars

How do we treat Acne Scars?

Treatment of acne scars can be achieved in various ways. All acne scar conditions and skin surfaces may not be treated by one procedure. Each treatment regime is custom tailored for individual patients and depends upon their age, skin condition, hereditary, hormonal, as well as medical and environmental factors. Your dermatologist at Binsina Laser Clinic can advise you the best treatment or combination of treatments suited to your condition. Treatments are carefully selected from the following set of procedures after a thorough examination of the area to be treated.

How do these treatments work?

Inflammatory acne and superficial scars can be successfully treated with Lime Light Facial, a non-surgical procedure. There is no pain and no downtime. Areas generally treated are the face, neck and décolleté. Results usually start to become visible after the second treatment. A course of six treatments is normally recommended for good results but more could be required depending upon the skin condition. The procedure can be customized to your skin type to selectively treat the damaged areas on your skin.

For deeper scars, the eTwo Sublative is a more effective procedure. Using an ergonomic applicator it delivers bi-polar radio frequency energy via a matrix of electrodes, which cause the healthy skin around the dots to accelerate the healing process. Post treatment, new collagen and healthy skin cells are produced leading to a resurfacing of the scars. This procedure treats most skin types and there is minimal downtime. Some redness or slight swelling of the treated area can be experienced but it is temporary.

For even deeper scars, be they related to acne or post-inflammatory scarring, the Portrait® Plasma works by delivering millisecond pulses of nitrogen plasma energy to the skin’s surface via a special hand piece that stimulates and produces new collagen, which form the building blocks for skin regeneration. This is a non-laser, non-surgical procedure suitable for most skin types.

What treatment is right for me?

Treatment of acne scars varies from case to case and is driven by the type and severity of the scar. At Binsina Laser Clinic, we customize the treatment regimen for each individual patient to get the best results. After a computerized analysis of the affected area, the dermatologist will explain the procedure and its likely success, and prescribe a treatment programme to achieve the desired objectives. Since each case is different, this programme can include either one type of treatment procedure or a combination of different procedures and topical applications designed to reduce the impact of scars. In severe cases, a certain degree of permanent scarring cannot be avoided.

How long does the treatment take?

An average procedure can take between 30 to 60 minutes, depending upon the procedure. A typical course of therapy includes five – six treatments, one to three weeks apart depending upon the treatment regimen. A second course may be needed in severe cases. However, once the acne scars have substantially subsided, we recommend a monthly top-up treatment of cleansing and exfoliation to maintain skin health.

Does it hurt?

Tolerance of pain is very individual and varies from person to person. In certain procedures no anesthetics are required, there is no pain and no downtime. In other procedures, a numbing cream is required and there can be some pain and some downtime, anywhere between five to seven days.

When will I see the results?

Results depend upon the age and condition of the skin. Some patients start to see early results over a period of 6 – 8 weeks. Others may take longer to see improvements. Further improvements continue to be observed for several months after the treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Each treatment regimen is different and varies from case to case depending upon age, skin condition, hormonal imbalances, genetic disposition, medical, environmental and dietary factors. Most patients can expect between 5 to 6 treatments to see improvement. However, some may require more to achieve the desired results.

Are there any side effects?

Generally, there are minimum side effects such as slight redness or mild swelling in the treated area, which is generally temporary. Patients are advised not to expose the treated area to direct sunlight, very hot water and abrasive cleansers for some time. Patients are strongly advised to follow post-care instructions provided by the Clinic to minimize risks and achieve the desired results.

How do Binsina’s treatments compare with those of other laser treatments?

Most laser procedures generally treat one or two skin conditions such as red or brown spots, or skin laxity. At Binsina Laser Clinic, we take a comprehensive approach to individually treating all common skin conditions such as age spots, sun damage, enlarged pores, acne and acne scars, pigmentation and melasma, stretch marks, fine lines and coarse wrinkles, thread and leg vein removal, as well as skin laxity. There is a different treatment approach to each skin condition and the best treatment or combination of treatments can be advised by your dermatologist at Binsina Laser Clinic.
